How to Get Wax Out of Carpet

Getting wax out of carpet can be a difficult task. Unfortunately, as scented candles and candle warmers have become increasingly popular, spilling wax on your carpet is becoming a far more common problem. However, with the right tools and a little work, you can get the wax out of your carpet and getting back to looking like new. Required Tools

- Credit card or something similar
- Vacuum with a hose
- Iron
- clean white cloths and paper bags

Steps to get out the wax

1. The first thing you want to do is remove the bulk of the wax spill with your card. Being cautious not to damage carpet fibers, scrape the bulk of the wax away from the carpet. Continue doing this until you can't remove any more wax with the card. Placing ice in a bag and setting it on top of the wax can help harden the wax, making it easier to break away

2. Vacuuum as much of the loose wax as you can and continue to repeat until you can't break away any more wax.

3. Once you have broken away as much wax as you can, we want to melt the wax back to a liquid to make it easier to remove the remaining residue. Place part of your paper bag over the wax and set your iron on top of it. Be extremely careful not to leave your iron so long that it burns the carpet. Check frequently. You will want to leave your iron on the lowest setting and turn off the steam. We just want to melt the wax with heat. Continue using the iron, moving the paper every few seconds to a clean section of the bag to continue absorbing wax from the carpet.

4. After the wax is gone, you may still have a stain or some final residue on the carpet. If so, mix a cleaning solution of 8 parts water to 1 part ammonia. Soak a white rag in the solution and begin blotting the stain (without rubbing. Rubbing will damage carpet fiber). Blot the stain with your white cloth until no more color is transferring from your carpet to your cloth.

5. Hopefully at this point, the stain is gone. If not, create another solution of 3 parts baking soda to 3 parts water and cover the stain. Let the paste dry and then vacuum the area. The paste should absorb some of the color. Continue to repeat this until no more color is absorbing into the baking soda.

6. Finally, you will want to rinse the area to remove the cleaning solutions, by pouring a small amount of cold water on the area and extracting with a shopvac or towels. Continue to do this several times and then cover the area with a clean white cloth and place a heavy object on top of the cloth. Leave the cloth and heavy object until dry and then vacuum thoroughly.

If you still have a stain after this, you will likely need professional help to remove it. If you are in the Utah area, give us a call and we would be happy to help.
